Wondering what to do before you arrive? Here are some tips!photo courtesy Malaspina University-College

  • Apply for your student visa and make sure you have all the required paperwork completed.
  • Talk to a travel agent about airfare and travel arrangements. Usually if you book early you can find a better price. Flights fill up quickly during the weeks when school semesters begin so you will want to make sure you have arranged your travel plans well in advance
  • Make sure you have a valid passport and International Driver's Licence if you plan on driving
  • Go to your doctor and complete any required medical exams. Obtain a copy of your health records with information about allergies and immunization records
  • If you need specific medical prescriptions fill them before you arrive and ensure that all medication is clearly labeled. Have an extra pair of glasses, contact lenses and any other personal health products that you might want to have with you.
  • Organize somewhere to stay when you arrive if you do not have housing for your school term pre-arranged. There are many student hostels and affordable hotels if you need a short term solution for when you arrive.
  • Make sure you have some Canadian money with you or can exchange your home currency when you arrive at the airport so that you can pay for transportation from the airport
  • Remember to put your travel documents, airline tickets and other information in a safe place and keep a list of emergency phone numbers with you
  • If you do not have a web based email account like Hotmail or Yahoo before you leave home, make sure you have an updated address book with email addresses, city addresses, and phone numbers for all your family and friends
  • Bring some photos from home so you can show your new friends in Canada what it is like in your home country
  • Have fun learning more about British Columbia and Canada - read some guide books, surf the internet, watch Canadian television or movies and talk to friends and family who have been here before. By the time you get here you will be ready to make the most of your experiences here in Canada!
  • Drink lots of water on the plane and relax, soon you will be arriving in British Columbia, Canada
