Working and living in British Columbia

Many students who come to study in British Columbia also want to work while they attend school, or continue to work and live in BC after they have completed their education. It is sometimes possible to work in BC but there is some important information that you need to know, and it is very important that you contact the Canadian government to make sure you are legally allowed to work in Canada. The following is some basic information.

Working While in School

If you are a registered full time student you may work on campus without having prior government authorization. Spouses of full time students may also be eligible to work in Canada.

The Off-Campus Work Permit Program may allow full time students enrolled at participating public institutions or in an approved program at an eligible private institution to obtain a permit to work off campus while completing your course of study.

If there is an employment component of your program you may be able to receive authorization to work. You should contact the international student office at the institution you are attending to find out more. For general information about working in Canada please consult the Government of Canada website.

Working after Completing your Studies

Most students who come to study in BC do so using a visitor visa or study permit which is only valid for the time of study. Students wishing to gain work experience in their field of studies may be able to receive authorization to work up to two years in Canada under the Post-Graduate Work Permit Program. If you wish to stay longer you will have to apply for a different type of visa. This process is often lengthy and there are many different rules and regulations.

If you wish to learn more about staying in BC after your studies, please consult a local Canadian government office or your school. For more detailed information on working in Canada please consult the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
